Hockey-Sangamitta Balika emerge champions

Sangamitta Balika Vidyalaya, Matale kept to their reputation as the strongest girls schools outfit when they become champions at by defeating Janadhipathi Vidyalya Nawala 4-3 on penalty strokes in the finals of the Schools Hockey Championship 2013 organized by the Ministry of Education and played at the sports Ministry Astra Turf.

Sangamittha Balika Vidyalaya run of success has been fir they won the Matale schools girls Hockey tournament and followed by winning the Central Province Tournament defeating Seetha Devi BV Kandy 1-0. But this final turned out to be a tough game for them as Janadhipathi Vidyalaya rose up to the occasion and were on a equal footing.

By half time Sangamitta BV had taken a 1-0 had but it was short lived. They scored through centre forward Nuwanthika Ekanayake.

Presidents college seen equalized through centre forward Sanduni Dilhani but Sangamittha took over the lead through a fine goal by Nuwanthika.

Nuwanthika Ekanayake who breached the opponents defence with a sequence of dibbling to sound the boards. With minutes from the end Janadhipathi Vidyalya equalized through lift extreme Malindi Maleesha. Seeta Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy won the consolation championship by defeating the defending champions Museaus College 1-0.

In the two semi-finals Sangamitta BV beat Museaus College 4-0 on penalty strokes and Janadhipathi Vidyalaya edged out Seetha Devi BV 2-1 on penalty strokes.

Nuwanthika Dilrangi Ekanayake of Sangamitta BV was adjudged the best player of the tournament
