July 25, 2015.The much awaited Special Olympics 2015 got underway in Los Angeles , California toady (July 25) with a spectacular opening ceremony at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and competition at three sites in what the head of the organizing committee said was "one of the most inspirational events in sports of all time."

 Nearly 7,000 athletes and 3,000 coaches representing 177 countries will be in action in 25 games at the Special Olympics Games (LA 2015) which will be concluded on August 2

The Opening Ceremony, was held in the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, site of the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games, attracted nearly 80,000 spectators with millions of fans around the world through the live coverage on ESPN.

Directed by Emmy Award-winner Debbie Allen and produced by FiveCurrents, the show brought to a worldwide audience by ESPN and local broadcast partners.

The First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama will attend the Opening Ceremony on July 25 celebrating the commencement of the world's largest sports and humanitarian event this year. The First Lady of theUnited Statesserves as an honorary co-chair of the World Games with President Barack Obama with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and California Governor Jerry Brown serving as Honorary Hosts.

Performers at the LA2015 Opening Ceremony included Stevie Wonder, Avril Lavigne, Nicole Scherzinger, O.A.R., Cody Simpson (featuring Special Olympics athlete Breanna Bogucki and Youtube sensation Madison Tevlin), J Balvin & Becky G, and Reach Up LA theme song creator Siedah Garrett. With appearances by Jimmy Kimmel, Eva Longoria, Michael Phelps, Yao Ming, Greg Louganis, Stephanie McMahon and Lauren Potter among others, the show went to the history as one of the most inspirational events Los Angeles has ever hosted.

“We manage to bring medals at the last Special Olympics held inAustralia. I think we got a pretty good chance in athletics this time as well. Dilki Fernando who is competing in women’s 100m is up to the medal winning performance. We hope she could get a medal for us”   Dr. Kariyawasam said.

“ Sri Lanka has been performing exceptionally  well at previous special Olympiads with our athletes  winning  11 Gold’s, five silvers and a bronze medal at the World Games in Greece in 2011 . In 2013 at the Sydney Olympiad, our team won five golds, four -silver and eight bronze medals. We expect our athletes to do our country proud this time as well – added Dr Kariyawasam in conclusion.
