Carlton Super 7’s kicks off May 26

Carlton Sports Club (CSC) together with the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union proudly presents Carlton Super Sevens 2012, the biggest rugby tournament in the island for the 4th consecutive year from May 26 to June 3 in Kandy and Colombo.

The first two versions were a new experience for the rugby fans in the country as 20 Asian and International teams participated in the tournament. The most notable being the Fijian and New Zealand teams who played in this tournament in the early editions.

The 2011 version of Carlton Rugby adapted a new concept a concept which was used for the first time for rugby in the world. The 2011 version followed a franchise based concept where 10 franchisers were established.

The Carlton Super Sevens 2012 will consist of regional teams consisting of local club players, international players and under 21 players while its main goal is to enhance the standards of local rugby.

The event would be a great launching pad for up and coming players as well as the senior local payers as they would be exposed to playing with players such as Tomasi Cama, D.J Forbes, Tim Mickkleson, Frank Halai Matthew Turner and Dan Norton who could be recognized as the leading sevens players in the world.

As a measure of developing the junior level players each franchise should have an under - 21 player on the field at every given time. The teams should also consist of four foreign players as 40 “A” grade international players would be participating in order to develop the skill level as well as provide the experience to compete with international players at the international level.

The tournament is a two week tournament boasting 10 teams from the 9 districts while there will also be an additional combined team. The following franchises will compete in the Carlton Super Seven's Tournament.

The teams - Jaffna Challengers, Western Warriors, North Western Blacks, Eastern Eagles, Sabaragamuwa Stallions, Uva Vipers, North Central Typhoons, Southern Sharks, Central Kings and Northern Gladiators

The teams will be coached by ten international coaches who have excelled in coaching sevens teams during the past few years.

The tournament in Kandy and Colombo will be graced by many Indian and Sri Lankan celebrities adding glamour to the events.

Two days of rugby action will come to a conclusion with a concert featuring the cream of Bollywood as there would be acts by films stars such as Bipasha Basu, Sameera Reddy followed by a 120 minute concert featuring Shankar Ehsaan & Loy including many acts by local artists as well on June 3 at Police Park.

Vivek Oberoi and Ptreethi Zinta will be the guest artists for the Kandy tournament

QUESTION?

Should Dilshan have continued until Cricket World Cup 2019?

Yes No
THE DAY'S QUOTE

“That was pathetic. No excuse at all. The whole team is responsible. Whoever the captain is, we have to back him and try and support him. The captain has to do so many other stuff. All the 11 guys must back him and support him.” “We have addressed the issue of finishing off the overs on time in the past as well, but it cropped up again. It’s so unfortunate to see Upul going out as he is a crucial player in our set up. He batted well against South Africa and it’s so unfortunate. This can’t happen again,” - Angelo Mathews

FEEDBACK/COMMENTS

Cricket is a game of fine margins and Mathews is set to be a modern great. Hang in their Angie, this team can achieve something on this tour. Thirimane and the youngsters form was a real positive. Prasad was missed. Chameera should be persisted with. If Bairstow was our early outcome could have been very different.
