Leading boxers vie for Layton Cup

The 76th Men's and Women's Layton Cup Boxing Meet will be held from 2 to 6 August 2017 at the Royal MAS Boxing Arena, Colombo 7. This meet will also serve as the first trial meet to select boxers for the Commonwealth Games 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia.

The Layton Cup boxing meet was initiated in 1942 during British rule in Sri Lanka, where the top-ranking boxers, particularly from the three Armed Forces, fought for major honours with the Cup being awarded to the Most Scientific Boxer. Last year P.V.D.D. Saparamadu of Slimline (Men's) and K.A.K. Hansika of the Army (Women's) won the best boxer's awards.

This meet is open to winners and runners-up of Novice, Intermediate, Stubbs Shield and winners of the Junior National Championship. In addition, any boxer who has previously taken part in Layton, Clifford Cup and National Tournaments conducted by the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka are qualified to take part in this meet. Those who wish to take part should be between the ages of 19 and 40 years.

All bouts (men/women) will consist of three rounds of three minutes each with one minute intervals between them. The organizers will provide the competitors with gloves and head guards according to international standards. A medical team along with a qualified doctor will also be available during the tournament as per international regulations.

The General Medical Examination and weigh-in will be held at the Royal MAS Boxing Arena as follows:

2 August - from 7.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m.

3 to 6 August - from 8.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m.

It is compulsory to produce the Record Book at the weigh-in. All competitors must carry a completed and an updated AIBA Record Book along with copies of medical certificate certified by a MBBS doctor.

The draw will take place as per boxer's seeding on 2 August at 11.00 a.m. at the same venue.

This year's meet is set to be a clash between top contenders representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, Army Red, Slimline, Hela, Casualine, Linea, Silueta, Vidiyal and Unichela. Army Archers, Air Force Kafir and Thurulie Boxing Club have also entered their top boxers to battle it out at the meet. Over 150 men and women boxers are expected to take part during the five days of boxing competition this year.

All winners, runners-up and semi-finalists will receive medals and certificates. The best boxer at the Layton Cup Meet will receive the Admiral Sir Jeffery Layton Cup and the best female boxer will be awarded a Special Cup.

Sports enthusiasts are invited to be a part of this great event that assures top class pugilists vie for the Admiral Sir Jeffrey Layton Cup and the emergence of new talent.

QUESTION?

Should Dilshan have continued until Cricket World Cup 2019?

Yes No
THE DAY'S QUOTE

“That was pathetic. No excuse at all. The whole team is responsible. Whoever the captain is, we have to back him and try and support him. The captain has to do so many other stuff. All the 11 guys must back him and support him.” “We have addressed the issue of finishing off the overs on time in the past as well, but it cropped up again. It’s so unfortunate to see Upul going out as he is a crucial player in our set up. He batted well against South Africa and it’s so unfortunate. This can’t happen again,” - Angelo Mathews

FEEDBACK/COMMENTS

Cricket is a game of fine margins and Mathews is set to be a modern great. Hang in their Angie, this team can achieve something on this tour. Thirimane and the youngsters form was a real positive. Prasad was missed. Chameera should be persisted with. If Bairstow was our early outcome could have been very different.
