Anika Seneviratne bags record five titles at SLTA

Ladies College teenager Anika Seneviratne swept to a record five consecutive titles at the Sri lanka Tennis Nationals concluded at the NTC courts yesterday.

She won the under 16 Singles and doubles titles partnering younger sister Alana to add to the under 18 Singles , Women’s doubles, and Mixed Doubles titles already won during the last week. She beat bottom seeded Anjalika Kurera 6/4, 6/4 in a tense final with Kurera who has hardly had any trouble beating all her opponents thus far in the tournament putting on a good display of consistent ground strokes and serves.

In the end Anika who made an unusual amount of unforced errors was too strong and hit some superb winners to seal the singles title.

In the doubles final the unseeded sisters combined beautifully to humble the top seeded Angelika Kurera and Sathi Silva in straight sets 6/3 6/1.

The official prize giving of the 2017 Tennis Nationals will be held at the SLTA today at 5.30 pm.

QUESTION?

Should Dilshan have continued until Cricket World Cup 2019?

Yes No
THE DAY'S QUOTE

“That was pathetic. No excuse at all. The whole team is responsible. Whoever the captain is, we have to back him and try and support him. The captain has to do so many other stuff. All the 11 guys must back him and support him.” “We have addressed the issue of finishing off the overs on time in the past as well, but it cropped up again. It’s so unfortunate to see Upul going out as he is a crucial player in our set up. He batted well against South Africa and it’s so unfortunate. This can’t happen again,” - Angelo Mathews

FEEDBACK/COMMENTS

Cricket is a game of fine margins and Mathews is set to be a modern great. Hang in their Angie, this team can achieve something on this tour. Thirimane and the youngsters form was a real positive. Prasad was missed. Chameera should be persisted with. If Bairstow was our early outcome could have been very different.
