Sri Lanka U19 XI got off to a promising start in the Asia Cricket Council (ACC) U-19 Asia Cup winning the opening fixture handsomely by 7 wickets against the United Arab Emirates in Group B today Friday at the Selongor Club grounds, Kuala Lampur, Malaysia. Sri Lanka pocketed 2 points to be in second place next to Afghanistan also on 2 points but on a faster run rate in their 7 wicket routing of the more cricket nourished Pakistan.
Sri Lanka bowled out the UAE who batted first for 69 in 22 overs with 28 of the allotted 50 remaining. Jehan Daniel with 3 wickets for 14 in 8 overs and Thisaru Rashmika with 3 for 17 were the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers . Praveen Jayawardene took 2 for 13. A significant factor was that only two UAE batsmen reached double figures.
Sri Lanka reached the victory target making 68 for 3 in just 16 overs. Kamindu Mendis led the way with an unbeaten 27 off 40 balls inclusive of three boundaries. Krishan Arachchige made 15 off 19 balls containing 3 boundaries. Nipun Dhananjaya was unbeaten on 11 off 20 with one boundary. Shah Faisal Khan claimed 2 wickets for 30 in 7 overs for the UAE.

Afghanistan topple favourites Pakistan
Meanwhile, little known Afghanistan, whose cricket has admirably braved the vagaries of internal strife, came in to the limelight by humbling the cricket hardened Pakistan by 7 wickets in a Group B match at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur. The hero was M. Mujeeb who decimated Pakistan with figures of 6 for 23 in his 10 overs in a total of 57 in only 20 overs. A feature of the innings was that six Pakistan batsmen were dismissed for ducks including the first three batsmen. Only Mohammad Taha 14, Muhammad Mohsin Khan 12 and Hasan Khan 12 got in to double figures.
Afghanistan needed just 9.1 overs to win reaching 62 for 3 wickets with Nisar Wahdat unbeaten on 25, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz 13.

India a cakewalk over Malaysia
In the Group A match, India strolled to an imposing 202-run victory over host country Malaysia at the Kinara Academy Oval. India rattled up an imposing 310 for 7 wickets in 50 overs steered by Himanshu Rana in a captain’s knocks of 107 off 130 balls and comprising 12 boundaries. Malaysia replied with 108 in 37.1 overs with Kinara Virandeep Singh making 52 off 70 balls with eight boundaries.
