Top seed Anika Seneviratne cruised to an easy title win as she beat third seed Savini Jayasuriya 6/3, 6/4 in the Sri Lanka Clay Court Nationals 2018 Open Women’s Singles final worked off at the SLTA courts yesterday.
Anika was undefeated from round 1 and entered the semis beating Tuvini de Alwis 6/1, 6/3 in the quarters.
The other finalist Savini had the better of second seed Janali Kawya Manamperi 6/0, 4/1 retired in the semis after beating Alana Seneviratne 6/2, 6/1 in the quarters.
Eighth seed Dineshkanthan Thangarajah continued his winning streak and entered the Open Men’s Singles final when he defeated Liu-Hui Retallick in easy straight sets 6/3, 6/2. Dineshkanthan will take on the top seed Sanka Athukorala who beat Delwar Hossain in similar fashion 6/3, 6/1 in the other man’s singles semi-final. Sanka too maintained an unbeaten record in the open singles event and today’s final is poised to be an exciting battle for the men’s single title.
Dineshkanthan booked his semi-final berth beating Mufazzal Hossain 6/3, 6/0 in the quarters. He beat Luca Knese 6/1, 6/1 in the third round before he downed Suranga Pushpakumara 6/1, 6/0 in the second round.
Sanka won a tough battle against M. Rostom Ali in the quarters 6/4, 4/6, 7/5 after he edged out Isuru Peiris 6/0, 4/1 retired in the third round. Sanka beat Kevin Markandarajh 6/1, 6/0 in second round.
The Girls’/Boys’ age category events of U-12, U-14 and U-16 will be worked off at the SLTA courts today. The tournament commenced on March 18 and will continue until April 3 at the same venue with 35 events on the cards.
