Two crucial games today in Singer League 2018

Today (7 April) there will be two games of the Singer League 2018 down for decision in the Hills.

Trinity will be hosting the Thomians in the Canon De Saram Trophy encounter at their Pallekelle Rugby Stadium while at Nittawela Katugastota the Antonians will host the Kingswoodians.

A defeat here for any team will mean that they will need to play in the Plate segment as only the top 4 will proceed to round 2 in the Cup segment.

Canon de Saram series between the two brother schools (Trinity and St Thomas Mount Lavinia) started in 1978 with the Kandy school winning in the initial battle. Trinity dominated the series from 1980 to 1987.

Thomians dominated from 1988 to 1992 before Trinity securing the shield back with a 17/7 win in 1993. Out of the 40 played Trinity won on 23 occasions while Thomians secured the trophy 23 times.

Both schools started their traditional encounters back in 1955 with the series led by Trinity (37) while the Thomians (26), while 2 games ended in ties. There was no fixture between the two schools in 1971.(SJ)


Royal continue winning streak

Royal pulled off a tough 18 points (1 goal, 1 try, 2 penalties) to 13 points (1 goal, 2 penalties) win over the Joes outfit which concluded at Havelock Park yesterday.

At the short breather Royal led 10/7.

First win for DS

D.S. Senanayake College scored their first win in the Singer League Under19 rugby when they handed off the Rajans outfit by 38 points (4 goals, 2 tries) to 10 points (2 tries) at the Navy Rugby Grounds in Welisara.At the short breather winners led 24/5.(SJ)
