Minister Faizer Mustapha was sworn in as the Acting Minister of Sports in addition to his Portfolio of Local Government and Provincial Councils following outgoing Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera resigned from their posts as they decided to sit in the Opposition as a separate group after they voted in favour of the No-faith motion against the Premier.
Thus, he becomes the 15th Sports Minister to be sworn in to the portfolio while is the first muslim ethnic to hold this important portfolio in Sri Lanka. H0wever it is not clear, if he would retain this portfolio in the next cabinet reshuffle scheduled before the end of this month.
Nevertheless, Sri Lanka have had three other ministers namely Mangala Samaraweera, Lakshman Kiriella and Naveen Dissanayake who had held the portfolio for a less than year as their tenure.
