Captains of the four teams participating in the ongoing Super Provincial 50-over cricket tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket expressed their views at a press briefing held at Galadari Hotel yesterday.
“This one day tournament is the most important domestic tournament in the country and this mega event is indeed an ideal opportunity for all the players especially the ones who are yet to make it to the national side” said SLC vice president Mohan de Silva.
“SLC has budgeted Rs. 43 million for this tournament as we consider it an ideal platform to identify new talent for the future Sri Lanka pool. Four U19 players have been included in the teams,” he said.
Kandy captain Angelo Mathews said, “I saw yesterday (Wednesday) the match between Dambulla and Colombo was very competitive. Domestic cricket is important as it offers opportunities for up and coming players to showcase their talents.”
Galle captain Upul Tharanga also shared Mathews’ views and said, “SLC is organizing this tournament on a very large scale and it’s useful for us to exchange our experience with young talent.”
Thisara Perera who led the Colombo team to victory on Wednesday in the opening match thanked SLC for boosting domestic cricket by conducting this tournament on a large scale while Kusal Perera who captains Dambulla said, “This tournament will give young cricketers the pathway to the international arena. I like to thank the officials who worked tirelessly to make it a reality.”
In the opening match Colombo beat Dambulla by four runs and Kandy beat Galle by 28 runs with the winners being decided on the Duckworth/Lewis rule due to bad weather.
