Sri Lanka Cricket has appointed former Sri Lanka captain Hashan Tillakaratne as the new coach of the Under 19 cricket team. His appointment is effective until the next Under 19 World Cup in South Africa in 2020.
Tillakaratne, who was one time batting coach of the Sri Lankan team is a qualified level 2 and 3 Coach (ICC Global).
His most recent coaching role was working as the head coach of the Galle team that won the four-day Super Provincial Tournament 2018 and became finalists of the limited-over Super Provincial Tournament 2018. He was also the head coach when Galle became runner-up of the Super Provincial limited-over tournament in 2017.
Tillakaratne, a member of Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup winning team is a former captain and represented his country in 83 Tests and 200 ODI’s. He is also an MCC honorary life member.
Tillakaratne succeeds another former Sri Lanka cricketer Roy Dias who held the post till the end of the last under 19 World Cup in New Zealand where Sri Lanka failed to qualify for the quarterfinals but finished as Plate winners.
