Labrooy and Rasanjali retainted to head Cricket Selections

Sri Lanka Cricket has announced the appointment of new National Selection Committee headed by Graeme Labrooy. Labrooy who was the former Chairman once again retained his position while Eric Upashantha the former National paceman has returned to the new committee with former members Gamini Wickramasinghe, Jerry Wautersz and National coach Chandika Hathurusinghe.

Upashantha replaces Asanka Gurusinghe who is the present National team Manager cum Head of the newly formed Brain Centre.

The Sports Minister Faizer Mustafa has approved this new selection committee which will be effective for a period of one year, commencing from 16th May, 2018.

Earlier Sri Lanka Cricket had named National Head coach as selector on tour thus giving Hathurusinghe a free hand during tours. Labrooy the Chairman of the Committee told www.srilankasports.com that their committee always tried to arrive at a collective decision with no personal agendas in this important selection duty. “We are a indenpendent committee and had not received any pressure from outside.”

He stressed the importance of the forthcoming South African cricket series and England series for the country and a very challenging Asia Cup tournament as well. He also mentioned about Sri Lanka ‘A’ team to tour Bangladesh as an opportunity to prepare a feeder squad. “We are mainly focusing on the forthcoming ODI World Cup in England in 2019, thus the selection is very tough but we are ready to do our best for Sri Lanka Cricket” said Labrooy.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka Cricket also appointed the Women’s National Selection Committee and Sports Minister has given approval for this committee. The new committee will be effective for a period of one year, commencing from 16th May, 2018. Once again Rasanjali de Alwis reappointed as the chairman of the womens slection committee and former hard hitting stroke player Waruna Waragoda is the only male member for this committee with three former women players. Waragoda who was the Manager of the Galle team at the Super Provincial tournament later appointed for the Manager of the national women’s team for the on going Womens Asia Cup cricket tournament in Malaysia.
