Women’s Asia Cup : Liengprasert claims five-for as Thailand humiliate Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka women’s suffered a shock four wicket defeat against Thailand women in their last Asia Cup group match played in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia yesterday.

The defeat is a bitter pill to swallow for the Lankan lasses who began their campaign on an emphatic fashion beating Bangladesh and Malaysia in their first two fixtures but miserably failed to carry on the momentum since losing their last three matches to end their campaign in disgust.

Incidentally this was Thailand’s first ever win against a ‘full’ member country. Thai’s victory was set up by off-spinner Wongpaka Liengprasert who picked up five for 12 as Sri Lanka batting first were bowled out for 104 runs of which openers Yasoda Mendis and Anushka Sanjeewani made 54. Eight others recorded single-digit scores in an innings that featured three stumpings and three run-outs. Oshadi Ranasinghe was unbeaten on 20.

Chasing a modest target, Thailand reached the target in the last ball of the innings to seal a famous victory.

This was Thailand’s first ever win against a ‘full’ member and the their victory saw Sri Lanka crashing out of the Asia Cup with just two wins out of five matches.

Thailand women 105 for 6 (Chaiwai 43) beat Sri Lanka women 104 (Sanjeewani 32, Liengprasert 5-12) by 4 wickets
