School kids beat Indian counterparts to lead series 1-nil

Sri Lanka Under-19 pulled off an emphatic 5-wicket win over the India Under-19 in the second one-day match thanks to an unbeaten captain’s knock of 92 by Nipun Dananjaya Perera to level the 5-match series 1-all at the Sinhalese Sports Club grounds on Thursday. The Lankans thus registered their first win in the home tour versus their counterparts having lost the two test matches and the first one-dayer.

The home team chased down a target of 194 with 26 deliveries to spare after bowling out their counterparts for 193 in 47 overs. Perera’s 112-ball match winning knock contained 7 boundaries with fine support lent by P. Sooriyabandara who made 52 off 71 balls, inclusive of 5 boundaries. They shared in a 92-run fourth wicket alliance taking the total from 3 for 88 in 23.1 overs to 4 for 180 off 43.1 overs when Sooriyabandara departed.

The Indian innings, having opted to bat on winning the toss, revolved around a top score of 49 by opening batsman Pawan Singh off 64 balls inclusive of 6 boundaries. The next best contributions were from A. Badoni who made 36 off 50 containing 2 boundaries and a six and Sameer Coudhary 32 off 61 with a solitary boundary.

P.W.S. Dulshan was the pick of the Lankan bowlers claiming 3 for 27 in his 10 overs while N.N. Fernando, L.R. Manasinghe and N.D. Paranavithana took 2 wickets each respectively.
