Another Sri Lankan medal hope was shattered on Tuesday when Nilani Ratnayake in the 3000m steeple chase had to satisfy with the sixth place despite her courageous attempt at the Asian Games held in Jakartha. It was very disappointing for a huge contingent from Sri Lanka who had been so far unbale to enter the points table sans medal.
Nilani Ratnayake coached by Sajith Jayalal ended with 9.54.65 seconds to end the race in sixth place.
However two athletes Indunil Herath and Gayanthika Abeyratna were qualified for the 800m finals to get some hope for Sri Lanka on Wednesday. Both Gayanthika and Nimali Liyanaarachchi were in the heats at the 800m. Gayanthika who ran the third head finished with third place with a time of 2.06.31 minutes to qualify for the final while Nimali the 800m National recocd holder who ran in the first heat finished 4th place with 2-06.74 place was unable to enter the final.
Meanwhile en the evening Indunil Herath who came from Kenya after a successful training finished third giving a close fight to enter the final with 1.47.54 seconds.
Meanwhile at the JiExpo Sri Lankan Rhythmic Gymnast Anne Marine Ondaatje who came from Canada performed well to qualify to final on Wednesday at the individual all round event. The coach Lina also from Canada said this young Gymnast still a 17 year old, has a good future and is performing really well at the moment. She has busy schedule and after this Asian Games she will travel to Bulgaria for the World Gymnastic Championship.
