Sri Lanka Women went down bravely by 7 runs to India Women having chased a 219-run victory target in the second ODI at the Galle International Stadium on Thursday. After India had posted 218 in 50 overs on winning the toss, the Lankan lasses put up a bold run chase.
It was spearheaded by skipper Chamari Atapattu who struck 57 off 95 balls inclusive of 8 boundaries and a six. She put on 89 for the fourth wicket with Shashikala Siriwardene who made 49 off 91 balls with 6 boundaries.
It was a decisive partnership with the pair taking the total to 129 in 35.1 overs when Siriwardene ran herself out. It put paid to the hosts chances at a stage when the two most experienced campaigners were well set. Five runs later Atapattu exited. But Nilakshi de Silva struck a gutsy 19-ball 31 striking 2 sixes and 2 boundaries in reviving victory hopes. She took the total to 207 when she was ninth out with the Lankan lasses requiring a further 12 to win.
But their Indian counterparts held sway claiming the last wicket conceding 5 runs to already clinch the 3-match series 2-nil with one more to be played. Joshi was outstanding with the ball for the visitors with 3 for 51 while R.S. Gayakwad took 2 for 37.
Top scorer for India Women was T. Bhatia who made a 66-ball 68 studded with 9 boundaries while skipper Mithali Raj made 52 off 121 balls hitting 4 boundaries.
Lankan skipper Chamari Atapattu shone with the ball too picking 3 for 42.
