U-19 Asia Cup: Sri Lanka beat Pakistan to enter Semi Finals

Sri Lanka under 19 in Asia Cup Semi Finals

Sri Lanka Under 19 grabbed their third successive win in the ongoing Under 19 Asia Cup tournament, currently being played in Bangladesh, when they beat Pakistan Under 19 by 23 runs today(02nd October) and moved into the semi-final stage of the tournament.

Sri Lanka will now meet Afghanistan in the semi-finals, while India will play Bangladesh in the other semi final.

Batting first, after asked by the opposition, Sri Lanka only manage to get 200 runs in 49.4 overs for the fall of all 10 wickets.

The openers N.D. Paranavithana and Nuwanidu Fernando gave a good start for the Lankans by adding 63 runs in 12.2 overs. Paranavithana departed for 26 runs made in 41 deliveries.

The 2nd wicket fell; when the score was on 65, when Fernando out for 19 runs. From there onwards, regular wickets saw Sri Lanka at one stage reeling at 146 for the loss of seven wickets. However; a score of 51 off 61 balls from kalana Perera and 33 runs from 50 balls from skipper Nipun Dananjaya; helped the Lankans to reach a score of 200 runs, which was adequate for a fight back.

23 runs from 41 deliveries by Nipun Malinga at the death also helped Sri Lanka’s cause.

Starting their reply, Pakistan under 19 got into a bad status, when the team lost 3 wickets for 49 runs. A brief partnership saw them slowly moving towards the target; passing 90 runs in 23 overs. However, two more wickets saw the Pakistani’s reeling at 95 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in 27 overs.

From there onwards; some extremely tight bowling by the Lankan bowlers, saw Pakistani’s going away from the game and managed to get only 177 runs in 50 overs for the loss of 8 wickets.

 For Pakistan, Awais Zafar made 43 from 72 balls; Waqar Ahmad made 24 from 57 balls and Arshad Iqbal scored 26 from 31 balls.

 In bowling for Sri Lanka, Kalhara Senaratne, Navod Dinusiri and Dunith Nethmika captured 2 wickets each and they bowled extremely economical spells. Nipun Malinga captured a wicket.

 With this victory; Sri Lanka goes into the semi-finals. They previously beat Bangladesh and Hong Kong.

Player of the Match was Arshad Iqbal of Pakistan, who captured 6 wickets for 36 runs.

The game was played in Chittagong, Bangladesh.
