Peterite Dinusha shatter 17-year-old record in 800m at School Games

Sooriyawewa National School in Hambantota came to the limelight on Thursday, the day 4 of the National Schools Games now in progress at the Sugathadasa Stadium when they established girls U18 800m record with outstanding performances.

34 records altogether had been bettered in this year’s Games at Sugathadasa stadium in Colombo. Friday the 5th of October is the final day of the meet where the President Maithreepala Sirisena will be the Chief Guest for the awards ceremony Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and his Secretary Sunil Hettiarachchi will be the Guests of honour.

Dinusha Chamudika de Silva of St Peter’s College shattered a 17-year-old record when he clocked 1:55.00 seconds in the U18 800m event to better Manoj Pushpakumara’s (A Rathnayaka C.C. Walala from Central Province) record of 1:56.3 seconds set in 2001.

Sasindu Deshan from Gurukula V.Kelaniya secured second place with 1:57.00 secs and K.G.C.K. Weerasekara of A Rathnayaka C.C. Walala took third place with 1:57.19 seconds.

Newstead Girls’ College Negombo broke a five-year-old record in the high jump when Aishwarya Aushadi Wickckramasekara cleared 3.12m in her second attempt. She bettered G W S H K Dharmaratne’s (A Rathnayake MMV – Walala) record of 3.11m set up in the 2013 championship.

In the under 16 girls 800m event Binadi Malsha set up a new record of 2.16.19 to erase the previous record by Netmi Nimsara of Gurugolla Weerasinghe MV athlete with 2.21.29.

Meanwhile Linuka Dewansith of Lyceum International School Wattala established a new record of 1.90m at the under 16 boys high jump event to erase the previous record of 1.89m which was set up by Dinura Jayalath last year.

In the Provincial championships, Western Province lead with 1079 points while Central and North Western Provinces are second and third places with 388 and 272 points respectively.
