Colombo Vishakians win sports excellence award at National Schools Games

Vishaka Vidyalaya Colombo won the highest award of 2018 sport excellent award with 145 points at the 34th All Island school games which ended at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday. This award was introduced for the first time by the Education Ministry According to a proposal by the Senior Consultant to the Education Ministry sports section Sunil Jayaweera. The sport excellence was awarded to the best school evaluating its performances in sports achievements throughout the year.

The principal of Vishaka Vidyalaya Sandamali Awiruppola said the students are very dedicated to excel in sports and in year 2018 they were doing well thus received the highest award from the President Maitreepala Sirisena. “Not only athletics all other sports like Netball, Swimming, Basketball, Tennis, Table Tennis and etc Vishakians did very well to win the championships this year.” said the principal. RoyalCollege Colombo with 140 points and Ananda College Colombo wit 75 points won second and third places respectively for this overall sport achievement.

National School Games this year showed a better competition with 46 new meet records being established. This was seen as a very good improvement and good sign for the future of athletics in Sri Lanka said Director Sport of the Education Ministry Colonal Manjula Kariyawasam. During the five day meet 21 girls records and 25 boys records established by the athletes .

Pasan Kodikara of Kurunegala Maliyadeva Boys school and Randi Cooray of Gateway International school Rajagriya emerged as the best athletes of the meet while Kodikara won the best track event award and Randi Cooray also best jumper award.

St Joseph college Colombo athlete Dilusha Kariyawasam won the best hurdler award while Peterite Rumesh Tharanga won the best throwing award. Best relay awards won by St Peters Bambalapitiya and Walala A. Ratnayake MMV .

St Peters College came to the limelight with winning boys under 16, 18 and 20 age group championships while Walala A. Ratnayake MMV won the under 18 , under 20 and mixed school championships.

Royal College Colombo and Museaus College Colombo won the best junior athletics awards respectively.
