Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers emerged overall champions to take the Challenge Trophy for Champion Regiment obtaining 294 points at the 55th Army Athletic Championship concluded at Sugathadasa Stadium on last Wednesday(30)
Prasad Wimalasiri the champion long jumper was awarded the Inter Regiment Challenge Trophy for most outstanding Track and Field athlete of the year for his best performance in the long jump.
The Inter Regiment Challenge Trophy for most outstanding performance (Men) was awarded to junior sprinter Aruna Dharshana for establishing a new meet record in the 400m.The Asian Junior medallist hails from Paduwasnuwara once again came to the limelight in this meet .
Aruna Darshana clocked a personal best and new Sri Lanka junior record of 45.78 seconds when he beat Kalinga Kumarage to win the 400m – the best time achieved by a Sri Lankan in the event since 2005.Actually Kalinga is the most senior 400m athlete qualified to run 400m final at Asian Games but Aruna the 20 year old athlete made good challenge to Kalinga finished with new record.
The Inter Regiment Challenge Trophy for most outstanding performance (Women) was won by triple jumper Vidusha Lakshani who finished the season on a high with a leap of 13.36 metres Indunil Herath the 800 m champion who came from Kenya after successful training once again perform well to win his key event .
Overall two Sri Lankan records were established along with 12 meet records in this three day meet which was organised by the Sri Lanka Army. All the leading national athletes from Army represented this meet .
