Sri lankan junior shuttlers arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport on Monday after a successful tour to Nepal where they were able to win two silvers and three bronze medals in the South Asian U 21 Badminton Championships. The team was warmly welcomed by the officials of the sport.
President to the Sri Lanka Badminton Association Nishantha Jayasinghe said that his committee was very happy to see our young shuttlers performing well at the recently concluded South Asain under 21 Badminton championships which concluded in Nepal.
President Jayasinghe further said that they had selected eight shuttlers for this Nepal tour and they had won one bronze medal in a team event while two silvers and bronze medals were won in individual events,
“This is very good exposure for this juniors. Actually we wanted to promote the players from the junior level and give them for this type of International tours.” said Jayasinghe.
The Sri Lanka Badminton Association hopes to select players to represent Sri Lanka at many international events in the future but the opportunity for international exposure would be given on a rotation basis where many players would get their international experiences.
Ranthushka Sasindu was the star of the tour for Sri Lanka winning two silver medals. He won the men’s single silver medal while he partnered with Dilmi Dias won the mixed doubles silver event. In addition Hasini Ambalangodage won the women’s single bronze medal. Chamath Dias and Chirath Illeperuma won the men’s double bronze medal.
