Harin Fernando becomes 16th minister of sports in Sri Lanka

United National Party’s Member of Parliament of Badulla district Harin Fernando was appointed as new Minister of Sports in a latest cabinet appointments of the Sri Lanka government on Thursday. Thus he becomes the 16th in line to hold the portfolio and is one of the youngest sports Minister’s at the age of 41.

A product of St Joseph College, Colombo 10, Fernando has excelled in Rugby representing the college team and has always been a keen follower of sports. Being the chief minister of the Uva province Harin Fernando was instrumental in launching many sports development programmes in the province and has been a prominent public figure among the youth in the region.

Speaking to www.srilankasports.com, the new minister of sports Harin Fernando said that he had received a challenging ministry with his new portfolio in sports and would love to be engaged in the development of the sports, throughout the country.

“It is a good challenge to uplift the country’s sport and I am more than happy to do it being a keen follower of many sports. I hope to give maximum freedom to the association for their activities without interfering in the decisions” said Minister Fernando, affirming that he would get all national associations to thoroughly follow the sports law and the ministry regulations.
