Shaheed Hilmy and Chalani Liyanage are national carrom champs

Shaheed Hilmy and Chalani Liyanage clinched the men’s and women’s championships at the 51st National Carrom Championships concluded at the Carrom Federation, Kohuwala on Sunday(10).

This was the first time both Shaheed and Chalani won this National titles after making tough battle throughout the tournament. Shaheed defeated former runners up and experienced player  Nishantha Fernando of Sri Lanka Navy to take the title while Chalani Liyanage from Air Force beat Rebecca Dilareen at the finals to take the finals respectively. In fact last year men’s champion Chamil Cooray was not this time as he went on aboard after Sri Lanka won the team world championships last year. The number two player  Nishatha Fernando was the favourites to take the title with his experience. However, young Shaheed, the former Royal College player did it smartly to take the tile for the first time.

At the women’s section, there was a major upset with last year champion Joseph Roshita (Army) was beaten from the Maduka Ranaweera (Army)at the quarterfinals. Roshita finished at the fifth place while Maduka was at the fourth place. Most of the ranking players took part at this National championship conducted by the Sri Lanka Carrom Federation.
