The Sports Minister, Harin Fernando has formally got the consent of the Police Department in Sri Lanka to send the three Police officers to the United Kingdom from the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP). Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) stated that they will be working closely with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Ministry of Sports regarding the safety of the team in the pinnacle tournament in limited-overs cricket, which is set to commence on the 30th of May in England & Wales. With this decision, three Police officers attached to the Ministers Security Division (MSD) will leave to London along with the Sri Lankan cricket team for the forthcoming ICC world cup which scheduled to be commenced from 30th May.
Sports Minister further added SLC requested for additional security with the present situation that’s, why we got the necessary approvals from the MSD to send three of their finest officers with the team. The security officers will work closely with ICC security officers in this world cup. At the moment we are in no position to take any risks added Sports Minister.
Meanwhile, due to Easter Sunday bombings, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had to cancel their Motivation Camp in Maduru Oya and Training Camp in Dambulla last week. The national team conducted a couple of practice session at SSC grounds this week under heavy protection of the Gajaba Regiment of Sri Lanka Army.
Sri Lankan cricket team scheduled to leave for England on 7th May for the pre-preparation for the world cup and they will play two ODI’s against Scotland followed by two practice matches against South Africa and Australia.
