The right-arm seamer picked up a left hamstring injury during training, later revealed to be a grade 1 tear, ruling him out of action for between three and four weeks.
Mashrafe struggled in the World Cup 2019 in England and Wales with an injury and finished the tournament with just one wicket to his name in eight innings.
With the Tigers scheduled to depart for the island nation Saturday, Mashrafe incurred another injury to his left hamstring while bowling in the nets during training Friday at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.
Tamim will lead the Tigers, who will face the Lankans in three ODIs on July 26, 28 and 31 respectively. All the matches – day-night affairs – will be held in Colombo.
Tamim does have previous international leadership experience, having skippered the Tigers in one Test in New Zealand in 2017 following an injury to then-captain Mushfiqur Rahim. This will, however, be his first time leading in ODIs.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board declined to name a replacement in the squad, which has already been announced.
