Ex-New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori has been brought in as Bangladesh’s spin consultant, while former South Africa quick Charl Langeveldt has been appointed to lead the fast-bowling department on a full-time basis.
Langeveldt represented his country 87 times between 2001 and 2010, before working as a fast-bowling coach for the Proteas, and most recently Afghanistan.
Vettori has committed to a 100-day tenure with the Tigers in the lead up to the 2020 ICC T20 World Cup in Australia, and will be with the side for this year’s tour of India, the Asia Cup and and a further away trip against Kane Williamson’s Black Caps in the new year. Vettori has most recently held coaching roles at Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Australian Big Bash League’s (BBL) Brisbane Heat.
The 40-year old, who is his New Zealand’s most prolific wicket-taker in international cricket spoke of his excitement to link up with the Bangladesh setup, praising the side’s up and coming prospects and touching on fond memories touring Bangladesh.
“This is a team on the rise and there is so much experience and potential. It will be a pleasure to work with the likes of Shakib Al Hasan, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam and the other up and coming youngsters which I am looking forward to with a lot of interest,” he said.
“I have followed Bangladesh cricket for a very long time and have some great memories from touring the country.”
He revealed his keenness to pass on his experience to the spin contingent, expressing the need to adapt across all formats of the game.”I hope to share my knowledge as a player and coach of the demands of modern day spin bowling in all versions of the game, and help the bowlers make good intelligent decisions, so that they can maximise their talents and skills,” he said.
“Spin bowling has been a traditional strength for Bangladesh.”
Bangladesh are currently 1-0 down in their three-match ODI series away in Sri Lanka, and will look to draw parity with a victory in the second match on Sunday, 28 July.
