Australia batsman Steve Smith became the first player to make fifty in seven consecutive Ashes innings before retiring hurt following a sickening Jofra Archer bouncer.
Smith’s run goes back to the 2017-18 Ashes series, when Australia thumped England 4-0 with the then-captain Smith contributing 687 runs at an average of almost 140.
In the opening Test of the current Ashes series at Edgbaston, Smith scored 144 and 142 to help Australia recover from an ominous position to beat England by 251 runs. Smith also came to the crease at Lord’s with England on top but the record-breaking batsman halted the hosts’ charge with another patient fifty.
He was forced to retire hurt in the afternoon session, however, after being hit twice by Archer in a spell when the England bowler clocked speeds of 96mph.

Smith is sent tumbling to the turf as he's caught on the chin by a short Archer delivery and retires on 80.
