Musaeus College and Gateway College are set to take local netball by storm as they join hands to play their second annual encounter for the Marie Musaeus Rohini Alles Challenge Trophy scheduled to be held on September 7 at Gateway College Grounds, Ratmalana.
Students from one of Sri Lanka’s oldest private schools will pit their skills against those from a premier international school in an atmosphere of healthy rivalry and camaraderie. The two schools will vie for the ‘Marie Musaeus – Rohini Alles Trophy’, named after the founders of the two schools.
Established in 1891, Musaeus College has progressed steadily and evolved into one of the country’s most sought after academic institutions for the education of young girls. The school owes much to its founder Marie Musaeus Higgins, a German educationist, is best known as the founder and Principal of Musaeus College. She authored several publications based on Buddhist and Sinhala cultural themes and is recognised as a pioneer in female education in the country. The school aims to encourage students to involve themselves in all spheres of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.
Rohini Alles is a former teacher of Royal College, Colombo and the founder Deputy Principal of President’s College. Mrs. Alles played a decisive role in the establishment of Gateway, especially in instituting its Primary School. Having been a strength to the Founder, R. I. T. Alles during the formative years of the organisation, Mrs. Alles continues to play an important leadership role at Gateway.
The inaugural match held in honour of the founders of the two schools was held in June last year. The opening game was in an absolute thriller in which the Musaeus girls got the better of the Gateway girls by the slender margin of two points to win the game 27-25.
A prominent sports personality and an outstanding corporate leader Kastunit Chellaraja Wilson will be the chief guest while the event will include activities for spectators and a joint follow-up social welfare programme.
One of the UK’s largest universities, the University of Central Lancashire and two reputed banks, the Sampath Bank and Union Bank will be the sponsors of the event.
