The Hundred, England’s new eight-team city-based competition, was launched on 3 October, with several details about the competition confirmed.
While much had already been known, including the identities of some of the players, coaches, and the novel 100-ball format in which games will be played, the team names had only been reported until now, though they are much as expected.
Each team has been allocated one England red-ball contracted player, who may only be available for part of the competition, and also chosen two local icon players, with the rest of the squads due to be selected at a draft on October 20. Each team has chosen two England players for the women’s version of the competition.
In that draft will be a number of T20I captains – Shakib Al Hasan, Quinton de Kock, Aaron Finch, Kane Williamson, Kieron Pollard, Rashid Khan, and Lasith Malinga – along with other white-ball superstars Steve Smith, Chris Gayle, David Warner, Faf du Plessis, Kagiso Rabada, Babar Azam, and Mitchell Starc. More overseas stars are set to be confirmed, while also in the draft will be many of England’s domestic cricketers.
