Dubai is set to host the World Para Athletics Championship 2019, a major competition in the Para athletics season this year.
With the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games coming up, more than 1,500 Para athletes are heading to Dubai this month for their last chance to gain a spot in one of the biggest sporting events around the world.
Taking place from Thursday November 7 until Friday November 15, the World Championship will be held at the athletics stadium of the Dubai Club for People of Determination.
Athletes from more than 120 countries are expected to take part in the competition, with the UAE team being made up of 18 players, nine male and nine female.
Looking to watch all the feats of strength? Sports fans around Dubai can head to the athletic stadium to watch the action and support their home teams.
This will be the ninth edition of the World Para Athletics Championships, with others held in London, Britain, with more than 1,150 athletes from 90 countries competing at the London Stadium venue of the 2012 Paralympic Games.
“It is great to have the event back in Asia less than one year before the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Dubai and the UAE have been very important partners of the Paralympic Movement for a long time and we have full confidence that Dubai will exceed our expectations,” said Ryan Montgomery International Paralympic Committee Summer Sports Director.
CEO of the Dubai Club for People of Determination added: “As a club and as emirate, we have a long tradition within our organisation of delivering world class sporting events.”
“We will build on what we have learned from hosting the Para Athletics Asia-Oceania Championships and our annual World Para Athletics Grand Prix, ensuring that this championship builds on the success of previous editions and the athletes inspire the world.”
