Dinesh Priyantha Herath wish of flying the Sri Lankan flag high at the World Para Athletics Championship in Dubai was shattered at the last moment when he missed the Gold medal in Men’s F46 Javelin Throw tonight.
Sundar Singh surpassed Dinesh’s attempt in his final attempt by finding a distance of 61.22 m taking the Gold leaving Sri Lankan behind. His team mate Ajeet Singh (59.46m) took the bronze.
His team mate with a distance of 59.85m in his fourth attempt and dropped Ajeet Singh in to third place at the end of the fourth attempt, threatening Sri Lanka’s gold medal hope.
Dinesh who had the bronze at the last Rio Paralympics in 2016 who has recorded 61.84m before the start of the event was the favorite to win the gold and all medal hopes of the Sri Lankan camp were rested on his shoulder as none of the Sri Lankan athletes were able to make a mark on the championship medal tally.
Dinesh took the lead among 13 competitors of the event from his first attempt by throwing a distance of 60.59m. India’s Ajeet Singh gave him a good fight by throwing a distance of 59.46m followed by another Indian Sundar Singh who won the title in 2017 with 58.05m.
2018 Asian Para games Champion Dinesh failed his second and third attempt with unsuccessful throw and faced an injury in his throwing arm. Dinesh grew this injury during the National Championship concluded in October this year.
Dinesh tried his luck with the injured arm but not able to make his throw properly that gave two Indians an upper hand to try for the gold.
