Light Infantry become champions at Army Para Games

Sri Lanka  Light Infantry (SLLI) soldiers were adjudged overall champions at the 22nd  Army Para Games concluded recently at the Sugathadasa Stadium. SLLI won 64 gold, 45 silver and 23 bronze to take championships. Gajaba Regiment (GR) and Vijayabahu  Infantry Regiment (VIR) emerged second and third runners up respectively in this meet. Gajaba soldiers won 32 gold, 28 silver and 26 bronze while VIR collected 19 gold, 21 silver and 20 bronze to finished third place.

Apart from the athletics Wheelchair Basketball, Badminton, Cycling, Wheelchair Marathon, Archery, Weight Lifting, Volleyball, Volleyball (sitting), Beach Volleyball, Table Tennis, Cricket, Swimming, Wheelchair Tennis, Air Rifle Shooting were among sports this 22nd Army Pasa Games which sponsored by Dialog Axiata Pvt Ltd. SLLI won the highest medals 26 from athletics while 38 gold from the other games.

Meanwhile, Commando Regiment Sergeant C.N.B Indrapala was adjudged best athlete of the year while best athletes of the games award won by M.V.T Dananajaya of SLLI.

Army Para athletes who performed well this Games signalled high expectations during the future International tournament. During the last Asian Para Games, Sri Lanka won 14 medals and most of the medal winners represented from Sri Lanka Army.

The sports Ministry  Secretary K.D.S Ruwanchandra and Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva were the Chief Guests at the awards ceremony which was held after three days event. The para-athletes who excelled the athletics and other games received the trophies, prized and certificates. The event organised by the Army Para Games Committee successfully while senior military officers including Major General Nirmal Dharmarata, Deputy Chief of Staff ad Chairman Army Para Games Committee also graced this occasion. The soldiers of the ten regiments took part at this Army Para Games during the three days at the Sugatadasa Stadium. Commander of the Army Lt General highly appreciated the para-athletes performances and wish them to get more success in future.
