Udaya Ranasinghe of Vidyartha College Old boys TT club won the triple crown at the 73rd National Table Tennis Championship which was held at S. Thomas’ Indoor Stadium – Mount Lavinia last week. Ranasinghe the experienced paddler’s performances was outstanding in this tournament which was successfully conducted by Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka successfully. Ranasinghe defeated Supun Warusawithana of University of Moratuwa with four setter game 11/7, 11/7, 11/7 and 12/10 to clinch the open men’s title while at the men’s double final Ranasinghe partnered with Nirmala Jayasinghe of MAS Intimates beat Rohan Sirisena of STAG TT Academy and Chameera Ginige of University of Sri Jayawrdenapura with a hard-fought four setter game. Ranasinghe and Jayasinghe won the first set 11/5 but Sirisena and Ginige made a good fight to win the second set 13/11 to equal the game. However, Ranasinghe and Jayasinghe won with final two sets 11/6 and 16/14 to win the men’s double title.
Meanwhile Ranasinghe completed his triple crown to win the mixed double final with Bimandi Bandara of Hillwood College Kandy . They defeated Sajith Kavinda and Nuwani Navodya of Sri Lanka Army 11/7, 11/9, 11/8. Hansani Piumila Kapugeekiyana of Sri Lanka Navy emerged open women’s champion with defeating Jithara Warnakulasuriya of Ladies College Colombo with 4/2after making keen tussle between them . Former National champion Ishara Madurangi together with Nuwani Navodya won the women’s double after making a five-setter game over Bimandi Bandara and Ayla Chitty of Ladies College.
This was the major tournament of the annual TT calendar and 227 paddlers were in action for the events of Men’s Singles, Women’s singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles and consolation Men and Women events. Udaya Ranasinghe and Hansani Piyumila Kapugeekiyana were adjudged most outstanding players of the tournament . The Secretary-Ministry of Sports & Youth Affairs K.D.S Ruwanchandra was participated as the Chief Guest of the awarding ceremony while TTASL officials and former National players lighten the event with their participation.
