Aiming at the upcoming West Indies tour, a system has been introduced to test the fitness of the athletes by covering a distance of 2 km in 8 minutes and 35 seconds.
Grant Luden, the new Fitness Performance Manager who joined the Sri Lanka national team, has decided to introduce this technique to Sri Lankan athletes. This method is also used in India to test the fitness of players.
Accordingly, a bowler must complete a distance of 2 km in 7 minutes and 30 seconds and a batsman must run the prescribed distance in 8 minutes. If an athlete fails the first test, they have to complete it again in 40 days.
If any of the 35 players in the squad fails the aptitude test, they will not be selected for the West Indies tour.
Sri Lanka Cricket is also considering cutting the annual contracts of players who fail the fitness test.
However, Sri Lanka Cricket is currently trying to postpone the tournament as it has been confirmed that Mickey Arthur and Lahiru Thirimanne Kovid, the head coach of the Sri Lankan team, have been infected, the SLC said in a statement today.
If the tournament is not postponed, the Sri Lankan team is scheduled to leave the island on the 19th of this month. The first match between the two countries will be played on the 28th of this month.
