Kyle Mayers became the first player to hit a double hundred in the second innings of his debut Test as West Indies pulled off an astonishing win over Bangladesh in Chittagong.
Mayers struck an unbeaten 210 to guide a Windies team – missing several leading players including captain Jason Holder due to coronavirus concerns – home by three wickets.
The left-hander’s 310-ball innings saw him surpass the previous best second innings score by a Test newcomer of 176, fittingly made by West Indies great George Headley against England in 1930. His match tally of 250 runs is the fourth highest by a debutant.

The 28-year-old’s performance was even more remarkable for the fact that he walked to the crease with just two first-class hundreds to his name while he had registered ducks in each of his two previous matches.
But Mayers and Nkrumah Bonner made the most of the absence of Shakib Al Hasan from the home attack due to a thigh injury to realign a chase of 395, following early setbacks, with a 216-run stand for the fourth wicket.
West Indies trailed by 171 runs on first innings but following the remarkable turnaround, Mayers – who struck 20 fours and seven sixes – said: ‘We never gave up.’
He added: ‘A guy making his debut and making a double should inspire all youngsters to work hard and reach this level.’
