Proposal between athlete and her guide stops the Paralympics

She might have missed qualification for the semi-finals, but for Keula Nidreia Pereira Semedo it was the race that stole the day at the Paralympics.

A season-best of 33.04 in the women’s 200m T11 saw Pereira Semedo from Cape Verde in the central Atlantic Ocean finish fourth.

But it is what happened next that stole the show.

Having come in last in her heat, guide Manuel Antonio Vaz da Vega pulled over the rest of the athletes, dropped to the knee and asked his partner to marry him.

She said ‘yes’.

The rest of the athletes, all of whom are visually impaired and could not see, clapped wildly as they witnessed the romantic act unfold before them on the wet track at the Olympic Stadium.
