While the Senior team is continuing their international battles the Sri Lanka U19 cricketers are getting ready to taste some tough battles of their own. The ICC U19 World Cup is around the corner and bearing that in mind Sri Lanka Cricket has scheduled two tours for the young lions to gear up for the big even as the pandemic has kept these boys off the field so much of the season.
Last month the selections took place in Kandy with a residential training camp and the selectors picking a pool of 75 players who are eligible to play in the 2022 ICC U19 world cup to take part in the selections and later the squad was trimmed down to 26 members.
The Bangladesh U19 tour is expected to begin from 07th October and the England U19 team is scheduled to play from 23rd November. Soon after this, the team is expected to head towards Dubai for the Asian Championship which will be followed by the ICC U19 world cup in the West Indies.
Former Sri Lankan opener Avishka Gunawardene is an ICC Level III qualified coach and has had previous SLC roles in the capacity of Sri Lanka U19 coach, A’ Team coach, and also the emerging team coach. In additional Avishka has assisted the Sri Lankan team as the batting coach on several tours. He will be assisted by a talented and experienced staff that includes Upul Chandana (Fielding Coach), Sachith Pathirana (Spin Bowling Coach), Chamila Gamage (Fast Bowling Coach), and Dhammika Sudarshana (Batting Coach) along with Mahinda Halangoda takes up the responsibility of the Manager.
