Virat Kohli has decided to step down as captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team after the 2021 IPL as he prepares to retire from the Indian Twenty20 captaincy after the Twenty20 Cricket World Cup this year.
Under Virat Kohli, who has captained the Royal Challengers Bangalore since Daniel Vettori’s captaincy in 2013, the RCB team has played 132 matches so far and won 62 of them. Also, when 66 matches are lost, 4 more matches have ended without a result.
Under his leadership, the RCB team’s best performance to date is winning the 2016 IPL runner-up. In that final, RCB lost to SunRisers Hyderabad by 8 points. In addition, the RCB team reached the playoffs in the 2015 and 2020 IPL rounds.
“I’m been on a big journey with the RCB team for a long time, leading a team of talented players. That journey is great. I take this opportunity to thank the RCB management, coaches, support staff, players and the entire RCB team. From 2013 to 2021, I led the RCB team for about 8 years. It was a little hard for me to decide to step down from the leadership. But the RCB family and audience are always on my mind. Until I retire from cricket, I will only play for the RCB in IPL matches. ” The 32-year-old Kohli said while giving his leadership decision.
The second round of the IPL started again yesterday (19) and the first match of the RCB team will be played today (20) against the Kolkata Knight Riders in Abu Dhabi.
