Investigations into 2011 World Cup betrayal suspended

The Attorney General’s Department has confirmed that the statement made by former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage that the defeat of Sri Lanka in the 2011 World Cup final was a match-fixing statement was baseless.

In June last year, Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage accused the Sri Lankan team of participating in the 2011 World Cup final and said that he had doubts about the selection of that team.

Accordingly, the then Minister of Sports Dullas Alahapperuma instructed the police to initiate an investigation, and later investigations were commenced.

As a result, then Sri Lanka Cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara, selection committee chairman Aravinda de Silva and batsman Upul Tharanga were brought to a special investigation unit for questioning.

Accordingly, the police have withdrawn the charge on the instructions of the Attorney General due to the lack of any credible evidence.

“There is no evidence to prosecute. Therefore, we have instructed the police to withdraw this case, ”The Sunday Times quoted sources from the Attorney General’s Department as saying.

Alex Marshall, head of the ICC’s anti – corruption unit, also dropped the allegations.
