Adisha Weeratunga, a 23 – year – old Isipathanian rugby player and a flanker in the current Sri Lanka Navy rugby squad, has been named captain of the National Sevens team.
He was selected in the national squad for 2018 and will lead the Sri Lanka Youth Sevens squad for the Dialog Axiata Asian Sevens Championship to be held in Dubai on November 19 and 20.
The 12 players have been selected from a pool of 20 players selected by the National Selection Committee from among the players who excelled at the Warrior 7s Invitational Rugby Championship held on October 30 and 31.
The mighty Kandy and CR&FC teams did not participate in the Warrior 7s tournament and no member of those teams made it to the squad.
The squad is currently training in a biosafety environment at the Sugathadasa Hotel under the supervision of Head Coach Nilufer Ibrahim and Ben Gollins of England, who is currently the Sevens Director of Sri Lanka Rugby.
The proposed 12-man squad includes four first-time National Sevens players.
Kingswood player Nuwan Perera of the Sri Lanka Air Force, who was the hero of the Warrior 7s tournament, has been named in the squad.
