Sri Lanka Women’s cricket team have defeated Bangladesh Women by 22 runs and have qualified for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022. They are now one of the 8 teams to play in the Commonwealth Games.
Both teams were unbeaten so far and only the winner qualifies for the Commonwealth Games. With the stakes high and only one team being able to go through, this was a must win game for either team. Chamari Athapaththu, the leading run scorer in the qualifiers, made 48 runs in Sri Lanka’s modest total of 136/6. Nilakshi De Silva and Anushka Sanjeewani chipped in with 28 and 20 not out.
The Bangladesh Women had their moments in scoring but were restricted by disciplined bowling. Chamari and her bowlers kept it very tight until Bangladesh crumbled in the final overs. Chamari picked 3 wickets while the others gave very little room to score. In the end, Bangladesh were short by 22 runs and lost 2 wickets in the finals overs and managed only 114/5.
Chamari was adjudged the player of the match and the player pf the tournament as well. Sri Lanka Women will be taking part in the Commonwealth Games T20 cricket, which was introduced after 1998 and as a Women’s only T20 event. The Games will be held in July this year.
