Former Sri Lankan Cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga has made a very bold and controversial statement yesterday over Indian media. He stated that the Sri Lankan cricketers playing in the IPL should return back to the country for a week and show their solidarity towards the country.
He has been very vocal on his thoughts especially with the Indian media over the last week and as a former parliamentarian, has been engaging in a lot of political discussions. His point is that the cricketers are living very lavishly in the IPL and when the country is in it’s worst economic situation, that it is wrong of them to ignore this ongoing issue.
“I really don’t know, but there are some cricketers who are lavishly playing in the IPL and haven’t spoken about their country. Unfortunately, people are scared to speak against the government. These cricketers are also working for the cricket board under the ministry, and they are trying to protect their jobs. But now they have to take a step as some of the young cricketers also came forward and gave statements in support of the protest,” said Ranatunga over a media briefing with ANI.
“When something is going wrong, you should have the guts to come out and speak against it without thinking about your business. People ask me why I am not in the protests. It’s just that I have been into politics for the last 19 years, and this is not a political issue. So far, none of the political parties and politicians have got into the protests, and that’s the biggest strength of the people of this country,” quotes the Cricket Times.
In addition to his request, he has also reportedly shown his displeasure over the decision in hosting the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, during the time of an economic crisis.
