“Dismissed batter” has right to ask for DRS, say umpires

During KKR’s crucial win over SRH on Saturday, the confusion reigned supreme in the 12th over after Rinku Singh was given out LBW off T Natarajan.

The umpire took his time to make up his mind before finally raising his finger to declare Rinku out.  But as the timer for the DRS review ran out, Rinku was seen in an argument with the umpire, suggesting he had asked for the review, but the umpire was having none of it, saying that the time was up.

Incidentally, it was Rinku’s partner Sam Billings, a non-striker, who had asked for the DRS.

“Only the batsman involved in a decision can ap;peal under rule 3.1.3”, informs India’s former umpire MR Singh.

“Only the batter who is dismissed can request for DRS withinb 15 seconds of being given out and or ball becoming dead”, another ex- umpire Vinayak Kulkurni said.

“If the striker is dismissed, he has to ask for the DRS. If the Non-striker being the dismissed batter in cases of run out etc. he can ask for the review”, he added further.

“The same rule says that only the fielding side captain or acting captain is allowed to review”, both umpires suggested.
