India have been dealt a double blow on the eve of the South Africa series. Captain KL Rahul and spinner Kuldeep Yadav have been ruled out with injuries. The stand-in captain suffered an injury during India’s second practice on Wednesday and has been ruled out as a precaution for the England tour. Rishabh Pant will lead in his absence.
“Team India Captain KL Rahul has been ruled out of the T20I series against South Africa owing to a right groin injury while Kuldeep Yadav will miss out in the T20I series after getting hit on his right hand while batting in the nets last evening,” the BCCI said in a statement.
KL Rahul will be another major absentee apart from Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah. With KL Rahul out, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan will open for India. However, BCCI hasn’t yet sought a replacement. Hardik Pandya has been elevated to vice-captaincy role.
This was the reason why India’s customary press conference on Wednesday was delayed. Rishabh Pant is likely to attend the press conference now. Rishabh was appointed India’s vice-captain.
