Sri Lankan Athletes Shine This Week

South Asia’s fastest man Yupun Abeykoon clocked 10.16 seconds and came in 5th place in the Oslo Leg of the Diamond League. Andre De Grasse won the race with a timing of 10.05 seconds. Reece Prescod and Akani Simbine came in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
This is Yupun’s 3rd appearance in a Diamond League 100m. The rain hit race prevented him from bettering his personal best but thr points gained is enough to keep him in the World Athletics Championship list to be held in Oregon.
On the 14th Tuesday, Sri Lanka Men’s 4x400m relay team finished 2nd place (3 min 06.05 sec) behind Team India A in the 61st National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championship. The team included Aruna Darshana, Pabasara Niku, Isuru Lakshan and Dinuka Deshan. This is the second silver medal won after the women’s 4x100m on Saturday.
Sri Lanka Men’s Javelin record holder Sumedha Ranasinghe threw a best distance of 74.55m and finished in 3rd place at the Citius Meeting 2022 held in Bern, Switzerland. This is a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze level meet. He came in 4th place last Saturday but managed to finish on the podium this time.
Last week’s Gold medalist in Geneva, Lakshini Sarangi Silva, only managed 4th place in the same meet for Long Jump. Middle distance runner Gayanthika Abeyrathna clocked 2:04.48 in the 800m event and finished in 6th place while 400m sprinter Kalinga Kumarage finished in 6th place with a timing of 46.36 seconds.
