Air Force SC lifted the 2022/23 SLR Nippon Paint Inter-Club League Rugby Tournament Plate Championship when they defeated Police SC 11-5 in the deciding match played at the Police Park in Colombo yesterday.
The Airmen put up a determined performance from the kick-off and went on to collect their points from one try and two penalties after leading 3-0 at half time while Police SC managed to score only a solitary try.
Air Force SC, of course, went into this game at the backdrop of some uncertainty having earlier lost their first-round game to Police SC 15-21 at Ratmalana.
But this time they executed their game plan beautifully and were spot-on in the lineouts and set pieces, which gave their hard-working forwards and the speedy three quarters plenty of options.
However, the opening few minutes of the game was almost even as both teams came closer to scoring but every time, they failed to crack the defence and succumbed under pressure. Air Force SC finally drew first blood in the 25th minute of play when fly half Nuwan Perera executed another trademark penalty from 30 metres out to give his team a close 3-0 advantage at the interval.
Shortly after the resumption Air Force SC further increased their lead with another penalty from Nuwan Perera – the highest points scorer of this year’s league tournament.
