BCCI Selection Committee: No replacement for Chetan Sharma before IPL, Shiv Sundar Das to continue as interim chairman

BCCI will decide on a replacement for Chetan Sharma before or during IPL 2023. The former chairman of selection committee stepped down following a TV sting operation. Shiv Sundar Das is leading the selection committee at present. However, with WTC Final squad selection on the horizon during IPL, BCCI will take a call on whether to appoint a new chairman or continue with the current panel at a later date.

The selection committee is back to four members with Chetan Sharma gone. In fact, since T20 WC 2021, India had been with just four selectors. It was only last month that the team got a full five-member selection committee.

However, the BCCI is facing dilemma on whether to recall some of the shortlisted candidates or invite fresh applications for the job. The last time BCCI posted an application, there were nearly 1000 applications. However, not many were highly qualified. One of the big names who did not even make the shortlist was former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad. He would have been the chief selector had he been selected.

With a combined Test experience of 25. Only Shiv Sundar Das has played 23 Tests. The entire selection committee has an international cricket experience of just 55 matches. Most of the players in the current India team have played over 100 international matches. Hence, BCCI needs an experienced candidate as a replacement for Chetan Sharma.

  • Shiv Sundar Das (Tests: 23, ODIs: 4, T20s: 3)
  • Subroto Banerjee (Tests: 1, ODIs: 6, First Class: 59)
  • Salil Ankola (Tests: 1, ODIs: 20, First Class: 54)
  • Sridharan Sharath (First Class: 139, List A: 116)
