The newly crowned SLR Nippon Paint Inter-Club League Rugby champions Kandy SC will take on CH and FC in their 2023 Clifford Cup Knock-Out Rugby Tournament quarter-final encounter on Friday at the Pallekele Stadium in Kandy.
Kandy SC retained the League Title for the eighth successive year when they defeated CR and FC 29-10 in the deciding Cup Championship Super Round segment match played at the Nittawela Stadium on Sunday.
In contrast, CH and FC were relegated to the bottom of the league tournament points table after they suffered a humiliating 12-60 defeat at the hands of Army SC in their Plate Championship match played at Panagoda. However, the league match between Kandy SC and CH and FC earlier turned out to be an exciting contest as the defending champions scraped home to a close 27-25 victory at the Race course Grounds.
Meanwhile, on the same day, Police SC will confront Navy SC in the second quarter-final fixture of the Clifford Cup at the Race course Grounds in Colombo.
Police SC had a decent league tournament specially during the second-round as they finished fourth in the points table while Navy SC ended in fifth place after they trounced Havelock SC 26-6 in the last league match played at Havelock Park.
In fact, the Havies will be up against Air Force SC in their quarter-final match on February 26 after the clash between CR and FC and Army SC on the previous day.
The oldest rugby tournament in Asia will be conducted by SLR after a lapse of four years where Havelock SC emerged champions in 2019 after defeating Air Force SC 40-21 in the final played at the Racecourse.
