Sri Lanka ended up in the losing side once again as they suffered a 1-3 defeat at the hands of Kazakhstan in the second match of the Central Asian Volleyball Association (CAVA) Challenge Cup Women’s Tournament Group ‘B’ fixture played at the Nepal Sports Council (NSC) Indoor Stadium in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu yesterday.
After having lost their opening match to Uzbekistan 0-3 on the previous day, the Sri Lankan Women produced an improved performance to stretch the game to a four-setter before going down fighting 16-25, 26-28, 25-18, 27-29 respectively.
Sri Lanka’s best moment in this game came when they snatched the third set 25-18 following a magnificent performance where they excelled in both attack and defence throughout these 25 minutes.
Earlier, Sri Lanka had the chance of winning the opening set when they took a 10-6 lead at one stage but lacked consistency and were comprehensively beaten 16-25 after 22 minutes of play.
The second set turned out to be even as both teams missed out several opportunities, but Kazakhstan held their nerves and pulled off a thrilling 28-26 victory to set the stage for a straight set win.
However, the Sri Lankan Women had different ideas as they stormed in beautifully and avenged their defeat in the first two sets by completely outplaying Kazakhstan 25-18 in 25 minutes of play.
Kazakhstan had the final laugh as they dished out some splendid volleyball in the fourth set and went on to seal the contest 29-27 in an absolute thriller, which lasted for 35 minutes.
