Ruthless Proteas romp to commanding win over Sri Lankao as shooter Van der Berg shines
The Proteas made it two-in-two at the Netball World Cup with a clinical win against Sri Lanka in their Pool C encounter at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) on Saturday.
Another sold-out crowd cheered the hosts on as South Africa secured a 87-32 triumph to remain unbeaten so far in their campaign.
It was a strong opening quarter by the Proteas as Elmeré van der Berg and Nichole Taljaard combined to put South Africa 15 points ahead.
The Proteas dominated from start to finish and went into half-time with a 45-18 lead.
Van der Berg put in an impressive performance in the first half as she converted 28 of 31 goal attempts.
South Africa made changes in the second stanza as they rotated around everyone besides Lenize Potgieter, who is still nursing a niggle.
Karla Pretorius notched up a personal milestone as she reached 100 caps when she came in during the third quarter.
Ine-Mari Venter also made an appearance and, in the process, reached 50 test caps for the Proteas.
Taljaard was another star performer for the home team as she delivered a solid supporting role to Van der Berg by completing 24 goals in 27 attempts before she was substituted.
Van der Berg ended with an impressive 50 goals in only 57 attempts.
Jeante Strydom’s six interceptions saw her claim player of the match for her standout defensive performance.
